Alfa Romeo uses a 3-pin connector for all diagnostic connection points on the car but not a 16-pin OBD connector as found on a lot of other modern cars. KKL cable is the most ideal and affordable diagnostic tool for Alfa comparing with other cables (eg: ELM327 OBD scan tool adaptors). VAG KKL 409 cable for Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo with FiatECUScan software (newly named MultiECUScan)
ECU Scan Adaptors for Fiat Connect Cable
A laptop running Win XP or Win 7 (64 bit) O/S

Instruction:
KKL cables comes with software CD, well install the FDTI driver software
Connect the VAG-COM 409.1 KKL cable with computer via USB port
COM Port setting. Open My Computer>>Device Manager>>Ports (COM&LPT)>>USB Serial Port (COM4)>> Properties
Click Port settings>>Advanced>>select com port in “COM Port Number” list– you MUST choose any number between 1-4. You can also slow down the Bits per second to 4800 which will give a slightly better connection.
Connect the KKL OBD2 adaptor with Fiat connector, then plug the colored end of the Fiat connector into the Alfa 3-pin diagnostic port.
Launch FaitECUScan after well built communication. Check the COM port you have set.
The FiatECUScan allows displaying stored fault codes, two error codes were detected: MAF and o2 sensor, then clear them.
FiatECUScan is able to view various live data display, like engine speed, air conditioning, engine loads etc
General figures when revving
KKL cable is able to access Alfa engine, airbag control modules. If you fail to access Airbag control unit, that properly because you plug the cable into the wrong OBD diagnostic socket. Alfa engine diagnostic connector and airbag diagnostic connector locate on different positions. The locations of each of the diagnostic connectors on the Alfa 145/146 are as follows:
