Why and how to properly warm up your car in winter

Whether warm up your cars or not before start the engine has been a long debate. So it is necessary to warm up your car before start the engine, especially in cold winter days?

The reason why warm up car:

Engine plays a significant role in vehicle operation. The engine runs normally at the working temperature between 90 ~ 110 degrees Celsius. But if not reach the working temperature, it can not transfer gasoline to gasification effectively due to the low temperature fuel system. In this case, it is hard to start the engine.

But many people have some misunderstanding of warming cars up and improperly warm-up may lead to following bad effect:

1) Warm up car is designed on cold temperature

When your car engine is cold, the computer tells the fuel injectors to stay open longer, allowing more fuel into the engine to help run cold. But if your car is built in 20 years before, you should properly have electronic fuel injection. As long as it stay normally, do not need to warm up car.

2) You may waste some money on gas

Those fuel injectors are wide open and spilling gas into the engine rapidly. Meanwhile, you are going nowhere. Ten minutes of this each winter morning, over the life of your car, can add up to thousands of dollars in fuel wasted. After about ten seconds, you waste more money running the engine than restarting it.

3) You will damage your car

Idling forces an engine “to operate in a very inefficient and gasoline-rich mode that, over time, can degrade the engine’s performance and reduce mileage.”

4) Idling is bad for health

Isabelle Silverman, who runs EDF’s anti-idling campaign, says that car idling “is the second-hand smoking of the outdoors.” So idling has bad effect not only for your family but also your neighbors.

Warm up your car properly:
1) Open the door, turn on the ignition to ON with engine OFF
2) In 3-5 seconds, you should hear the fuel pump priming the engine. Start the car 30-60 minutes after this happens.
3) Idle for about 10-20 seconds at the most.
4) Wait until the engine working temperature reach the normal condition. Slowly ease out of your parking spot and ease into driving.
