The 2023 Toyota Yaris Cross, particularly the European version with a mechanical key and immobiliser box, presents a unique challenge for locksmiths. While many modern vehicles can be handled with standard tools, this model has proven difficult, with some locksmiths refusing the job and others failing outright.
Initial Attempts and Failures
First attempted to use an Autel MaxiIM IM608 programmer. Initially, we tried the OBD method, which provided an in-code and out-code, but programming failed. Although Autel indicated the procedure was possible, in practice it simply didn’t work.
Next, removed the immobiliser box and attempted a direct connection using a G-box. However, we quickly discovered a physical incompatibility: the G-box connection requires two pins on the first line, but the Yaris Cross immobiliser box has only one. This confirmed that the vehicle uses a newer generation of the Toyota ID8A-H immobiliser, which cannot be accessed via the traditional connection.
Also tested other programmers, including Lonsdor K518 Pro and Abrites, but all failed.
The Solution
Rather than continuing to struggle with programming a new key from scratch, we suggest purchasing a second-hand immobiliser box that already had one transponder programmed. Using Autel, we then synchronised this replacement box to the vehicle.
A critical note for hybrid models: you must synchronise not only the engine ECU but also the hybrid control ECU. Once both are synchronised, the car starts without issue. No modules need to be replaced, and if you have access to Toyota online services, you could also buy a brand-new immobiliser box and programme it directly.
The Real Challenge: Dashboard Removal
The most time-consuming part of the job is accessing the immobiliser box. Like other Toyota Yaris models, the Yaris Cross requires removal of the entire dashboard, including parts of the central console. This may take two to three hours to complete.

Key Takeaways
- The 2023 Toyota Yaris Cross (European version) with a mechanical key uses a newer ID8A-H immobiliser that is not compatible with standard G-box connections.
- Many popular programmers (Autel, Lonsdor, Abrites) may fail when attempting all-keys-lost programming directly.
- A practical solution is to purchase an immobiliser box with a pre-programmed transponder and synchronise it using Autel, ensuring both engine and hybrid ECUs are synced.
- Be prepared for significant labour – removing the dashboard and centre console is essential and time-consuming.
