Some of us have been discussing the need for an affordable diagnostics tool for the newer MV Agusta motorcycles.
The reason, is that some of us do run in to issues and not everyone is lucky enough to have a good dealer or a dealer of any kind close by, sometimes its many hundreds of miles away. Others of course just wish to be independent or semi-independent of MV Agusta for bike maintenance.
The thought is that a diagnostic tool, capable of reading error codes and saving data from the ECU would be invaluable.
OBDSTAR iScan MV Agusta is a workshop technicians tool, for diagnostics of faults.
I’ve just been on with fitting an exhaust servo eliminator and used OBDStar to clear the fault code and the unit definitely needs an external power supply, either the mains psu or the lead to the recharge connector. Both come supplied with the kit. It won’t communicate without one of these.
It works great on my 2018 800 Butale. It reads and cleared engine and ABS history fault codes. There were no current faults displayed.
My 2018 Brutale has no inertial platform, although the inertial platform diagnostics are on the device.
I’ve alway used external power, either the mains psu or the lead that connects to the bikes battery tender connector. I’ll have to give it a go on its internal power but it’s not powered by the data connection like most car scanners.
This device is for diag only. It will not reprogram your ecu map.
It does everything the dealer can do except remap the ecu. I too was apprehensive about trusting OBDStar but I now own a few. I use the Ducati one often and it’s never failed. This one I’ve only used a handful of times but all features work as advertised on it. Impressive units honestly.
In the OBDStar there is a throttle body reset/relearning, exhaust valve-related operations (if applicable), adaptive parameters reset, service light reset, active tests of various components, and of course live reading of data from all sensors and switches. Depending on the model there is supposedly coding of the dash with the current VIN — I cannot confirm if that works for any MV.
There may be settings that won’t be clear, or, in case of multi-brand units like my MS80, it may not be immediately obvious which extra functionality is available for which brand, etc — so you won’t know till you try.
It’s useful to have if you do your own diagnosis and repairs. It allows you to do and test quite a lot of things. There is of course a learning curve but it’s easy enough to figure out.
The OBDstar iscan tool does show it is capable of calibrating the ES. Plus you will have future use of the device for other purposes.
The Texa is really just too cost prohibitive for most and very few will get to use its full capabilities. Texa bizzo costs about AUD $3500-4000 to purchase, & there is a subscription fee of about AUD $400 per year, and the cost of cables to be purchased for each individual bike that you wish to use it on.
OBDStar lists the same level of functonality for E5 3-cylinder bikes — including the MY 2021 Dragster RR — as for the 2016 Stradale, so should work fine.
I am not aware of a lot of principally different competition that doesn’t seem like a re-brand of the same platform (Ansel, for instance). All my research a while back led me to OBDStar. Their yearly updates are cheap.
OBDSTAR iScan is a potential cheaper alternative. It looks extremely similar to my Diag tool for the cars and as I said above that’s been superb.
